May 2020 (Welcome!)
Hello From Vermont
Welcome to our monthly newsletter!
We are Nick and Erin English, a husband and wife team in Vermont's Upper Valley. After nearly a decade living and working in the Boston area and working for a few years under the name Hone Design Co., we moved to Vermont in the summer of 2018. Nick was lucky enough to find his new shop space at ShackletonThomas in Bridgewater. This year, we rebranded to Petite & English and shifted focus to designing and crafting heirloom furniture and objects for the home. We will be sending out these monthly shop updates so you can see what we're up to.
Nick’s Shop Space
Charles Shackleton and his wife Miranda Thomas have been running their handcrafted furniture and pottery business, ShackletonThomas, for over 30 years. Their workshops are located in the historic Bridgewater Mill in Bridgewater, VT. Nick found his new home here in December 2018.
The Maynard Desk
At the start of Covid-19, Erin found herself working from home without a proper workspace. Nick seized the opportunity to build her a permanent desk. Through a local contact, he found some gorgeous Vermont-grown cherry lumber that had been sitting in someone's basement for more than a decade.
The name Maynard was Nick's maternal grandmother's maiden name. Both her and her mother played a major role in his upbringing. This shaker-inspired design shares a lot of similarities with his grandmothers. Elegant, strong, and timelessly capable, this desk will be a loving part of our home for a lifetime.
Erin shot and edited the full process of the desk being built. Watch below!
The Online Shop
We have a few handcrafted household goods up for sale on our online shop. More items will be up soon!
In the Works
This six-drawer dresser in curly maple is a personal project that features 98 (ninety-eight!) hand-cut dovetails. It's a shaker-inspired design with frame-and-panel construction.
A form study in white oak, this side table is a half-lap construction with turned, tapered legs and a beveled top. This will be up for sale soon on the online shop!
This is the P&E take on a butcher block cutting board, using maple that was sustainably sourced from the Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Park in Woodstock, VT. Most butcher blocks are hard to pick up off the counter since it's one solid piece. The integrated handles means it works as both a serving and cutting board.
