March 2021
Happy mud season from Vermont!
Snow piles have almost melted, birds are chirping, and we just noticed tiny buds on our lilac bushes starting to form. This year, we’ve set the task of growing our own herbs and some vegetables from seed in our kitchen. The first seeds we sowed were basil, thyme, rosemary, and mint. Starting your garden from seed is a great excuse to get your hands in the dirt before the snow is even done falling. By the time the last frost hits Vermont (probably in May!), we will hopefully have mature, home-grown produce ready for the kitchen. Erin gets to keep a close eye on them while working from home, making sure they get maximum sunshine throughout the day (possessively carrying them from one windowsill to another).

experimenting with: Wood Bowls
Because he refuses to throw away scrap lumber, Nick takes the pieces of hardwood that are too small to run through machines and turns them into something functional on the lathe. He recently turned these small Walnut and Mahogany bowls, experimenting with form and proportion. They make excellent objects for salt, tea time snacks, and more.
Whatchya think?
In the works
Truth time — we love White Oak! The weight, color, and versatility of this hardwood puts it at the top of the list. Nick is finishing up this beautiful White Oak dining table for our lovely friend in Quechee, VT. The table top came from a selection of quarter-sawn boards that really show off the textural qualities of the wood. The base features mortise and tenon joinery and is secured with Walnut pins. We are delivering the final piece this weekend, so we’ll share final pictures on social soon and in next month’s newsletter.
Nick is also building a new Cherry Maynard Desk for a residence in nearby Norwich, VT.
Much like the one he made for Erin, this lumber came from the beloved batch of Vermont Cherry that we picked up in Brattleboro. Read the story behind that lumber here.

Erin has been adding some recent video work to our Petite & English channels. Find us on Vimeo and Youtube to see Nick in action. She’s currently working on another start-to-finish process video of the Walnut Serving Tray. More to come!
